Digg and the Techno-Utopians

Friday, November 24th, 2006

For some time I have been observing the anti-religious nature of pretty much all Digg stories that rise to the front page. The story, if it contains any religious overtones, must be anti-Christian or, more generally, anti-religious. So I have been reading posts and trying to figure out the religious position that most [...]

Calling - Is it good theology?

Friday, November 24th, 2006

I recently was at a missions conference for a Southern Baptist Church.  It was interesting for me to observe the strong emphasis on “calling to full-time service” during the program.  Albert Mohler has written about this in an article on his web site.  I wonder, though, if this whole concept is bad theology.
First, there is [...]

Giving

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

In a report in “The Chronicle of Philanthropy” (November 9th, 2006, page 27) a study reveals that of 100,000 Protestant congregations surveyed, giving by church members to support religious missions, education, and social services was 0.38%.
That means that not even one percent of income is directed to missions. The number does not break out [...]

LonelyGirl15

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

There is a great story over on ABC News about LonelyGirl15. She was a young girl struggling with her parents, her boyfriend, and the things that young women struggle over and she was video-blogging everything. I remember seeing some of the posts because it was creating some buzz on the internet.
The truth came [...]

Got a Mac

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

After many years as a Windows user I have switched over to Mac. My MacBook Pro showed up this morning and I have been busy getting it setup. I must admit that I am a bit baffled by some of the things that were second nature to me under Windows.
All in all, this [...]

Islam Under Siege by Akbar S. Ahmed

Monday, November 13th, 2006

Book Review
I finished Islam Under Siege this weekend. It was an interesting read. I first heard Ahmed on NPR being interviewed about this book and thought it would be worth picking up because of his positive comments about Christian missionaries in Pakistan.
This book is a window into the “moderate” Muslim mind. I [...]

Not much to say about elections…

Monday, November 13th, 2006

Well, I haven’t posted much about the elections. I don’t feel I have had much to offer. If there is any lesson about this from a cultural standpoint it might be that cultural outsiders sometimes have more insight about a culture than insiders. The terrorists have repeatedly made the claim that Americans [...]

Rick Warren and the PEACE Plan

Saturday, November 11th, 2006

Last week I attended a conference in Atlanta conducted by Rick Warren and his staff from Saddleback Church. The purpose of the conference was to bring agencies in and inform them about the efforts that Saddleback is taking to mobilize churches for mission. It was a great couple of days and a bit [...]

Atheism’s Assault

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

YAAA (Yet Another Article on Atheism) has now shown up on the cover of Time.  As I have been following this trend, I thought I should make mention of it.
I will give this article credit for something not emphasized in the Wired article from last week.  This time, the author makes the case that atheism [...]
