World’s Most Diverse Nation

I am on a quest to discover which nation on earth could rightly be called, “The Most Diverse.” I have noticed that many Americans make this statement about their own country. As we hit 300 million people in population this month, I am wondering about the real stats.

Since I lived in Canada for a while, I know that Canadians see their own country as the most diverse. In fact, they see Americans as mono-cultural. I also have traveled extensively throughout the world and seen some significant diversity: check out India, for example!

Part of the issue is how one might define “diverse.” Is it a matter of immigration, non-native language speaking people, or total number of ethnic minorities? Is it a matter of religion, wealth versus poverty, or other social factors? One could go on… it’s not a simple question.

Anybody know where I could find some data?

    Dear Mr. Esler,

I read your article. Wow! How interesting. I was very interested in learning which is the world’s most diverse nation, so I decided to do a little research myself. Here is what I was learned: “America is the world’s most diverse nation in the world.” This was taken from a speech given by President Bush, during a time of sorrow, and might have been used as a comfort factor. I don’t know if there were any statistical facts to back up this statement. Here is the web site where I read that quote: http://www.btcnews.com/btcnews/996 . However, Indonesia looks like a possible contender based on information I read on the following web site: http://www.tgmag.ca/ap/country/apindo.html . Hope this helps!

    Sincerely,
    Ian
